Yorkshire charity elects new deputy chair

One of the region’s leading charities, St Gemma’s Hospice, has elected Sara Rogers, trustee of the charity and partner at law firm Clarion, as deputy chair.

Sara has been involved with the hospice movement for many years and has had links with St Gemma’s since 1997, working as a volunteer to help organise fund-raising events such as the annual sports dinner and quiz which has now been running for more than ten years.  Over the last five years, she has led Clarion’s work with the charity.

Sara became a trustee of St Gemma’s six years ago and has served on its finance and corporate governance committees over that period.  She is also the link trustee for the fund raising team and has been involved with a huge variety of projects over the years including the appointment of two chief executives, the raising of £5 million for the hospice refit, and the appointment of new trustees.

In her new role, Sara will be more involved with the work of the board and its relationship with the hospice leadership team which deals with the day to day management of the hospice as well as supporting the chair, Dr Rosemary Macdonald.

She says, “I have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with St Gemma’s and it is a real honour to be elected as deputy chair. The work the hospice carries out is truly inspiring and it’s no exaggeration to say that the exceptional care provided by the hospice team is vital to patients and their families. I find my involvement enormously rewarding and it is a truly brilliant place – not sad and miserable, but very uplifting. I would encourage and recommend those in business to get involved with local charities as their skills are desperately needed - I guarantee that they will get more out of it than they can possibly put in!”

Dr Rosemary Macdonald, chair of St Gemma’s Hospice, adds, “I am delighted to have Sara as a deputy and value the attributes and experience she brings. The board at St. Gemma's requires a multiplicity of talents and experience and it is good that a legal firm will give time for a colleague to carry out board duties. I hope it encourages more professionals within UK organisations to become involved in the third sector in this way.”

With more than thirty years’ experience working in private client law, Sara has expertise in advising individuals on their personal affairs, including tax and wealth protection, the creation of wills and trusts and administration of estates. She is a founding member of the Solicitors for the Elderly in Yorkshire and in 2001 she was appointed by the Office of the Public Guardian to be an external deputy for the court.
