Employees from Yorkshire accountancy firm Garbutt + Elliott have raised more than £5,000 for two local charity partners, after undertaking a demanding 35-mile cycle challenge.
A peloton of 28 employees donned the Lycra for the gruelling four-hour journey between central Leeds and York on April 15. Participants more than doubled their fundraising target, which will be donated to York Against Cancer and Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal, as part of an ongoing charitable partnership throughout the year by the firm.
The charities were chosen to receive support as both rely heavily on support from individuals and businesses to provide crucial services to people in Yorkshire.
York Against Cancer is a small, independent charity that provides help and support for cancer patients and their families in York and throughout North Yorkshire, as well as funding vital research and education programmes aimed at preventing and curing cancer in the future.
Julie Russell, general manager at York Against Cancer, said: “The fundraising team at Garbutt + Elliott have been long-term supporters of our cause and we’re very grateful for their continued dedication. Fundraising events such as these make a big difference to patients and families across the area, as well as raising awareness about our work.”
Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal aims to make the wards, theatres, parent waiting rooms and day case areas of the Leeds Children’s Hospital as child and family friendly as possible.
Julie Moody, director of communications and income generation at Leeds Hospital Charitable Foundation, said: “We are continually inspired by the incredible fundraising efforts from Garbutt + Elliott.
“Their ongoing generosity means that we can continue to support the communities we serve to live fulfilling lives, which would not be possible without the dedication from our fundraisers.”
The cycle, which was organised by Garbutt + Elliott’s social and charity team, follows several charitable events run by the firm over the past year, including a three-peaks challenge which raised £5,000 in July 2017. Every year, the York and Leeds-based accountancy firm selects two charities to lend its support through fundraising activities.
Russell Turner, managing partner at Garbutt + Elliott, said: “Well done to everyone involved in the charity bike ride; we really couldn’t hold these sorts of events without the dedicated support of all our employees, who are willing to do so much in the name of charity.
“Thank you also to everyone who donated generously and helped us raise funds for these important charities. Our target was £2,500 and we’ve well and truly smashed it.”
