Not least those who were let down, yetagain, by the inadequate flood defences when storm Desmond and stormEva arrived. Whether those affected can pick themselves up again after suchdevastation, remains to be seen. The public are of course right to beincensed by political parties not adhering to their promises to invest in floodspending levels over the years, especially since their own experts advisedthem of the necessity. The New Year usually brings a sense of optimism though, and as I sit writingthese notes in the post Christmas/pre January window, here’s hoping 2016 willbring more of that optimism; and hopefully a break in the weather. As you’ll see from our pages this month, we’re in something of a celebratorymood, here at Business Link magazine group. This year we celebrate our 30thyear in business. We’ve seen many changes over the three decades: for a startthere’s been three major recessions, there was the confusion that ensued aftera DTI initiative decided to brand itself with the Business Link name, despite ourprotests. We’ve also seen the advent of the ‘world wide wunder-web’,transform businesses and with it, the industry in which we now work. Without sounding like we’re bragging, we’ve led the way from day one: wewere one of the first to bridge the Humber with one magazine, the first in theregion to launch a business expo, the first to produce their magazine in fullcolour throughout, the first to enable readers to access the whole magazineonline, the first to create a tablet/smart phone friendly edition so readers couldaccess it on the move, and the first to offer daily business news, as it breaks online, shortly followed by the ability to have the top news items delivered direct to your inboxeach morning. It’s been a whirlwind of change for me as I first started writing for the magazine some30 years back, and was probably the most unsavvy IT person you’d be ever likely tomeet. That I’d still be here three decades on is a sheer miracle. Truth is, if you love whatyou do then it doesn’t seem like work , and hopefully that goes as much for everyonehere as, many of our staff have almost as many years behind them too.Whatever 2016 brings our readers, and let’s hope it’s only good news, we’ll continueto chronicle the achievements of those out there; to keep their businesses and ourregion, right where they belong. Good reading as alwaysW S FisherEditorFrom theEDITOR…2015 was a toughyear for many. To give some context to themarket for start-ups inLincolnshire, according to themost recent publishedstatistics 3,250 new businesseswere created in 2014. The totalnumber of start-ups nationallywas 526,447 which smashedall previous records for newstart-ups.There seems to be a number of reasons as to why there is agrowing trend towards self employment. Perhaps one of the key trends is people seeking to attain abetter work/life balance with the chance of having greaterfreedom over their own destiny as well as a drive for starting theirown business. There also seems to be a growing trend for people to leaveemployment to work with their previous employer on a contractor self employed basis. Despite the associated debt of a student loan, many newventures now come about as a result of University Graduateschoosing to run their own business as opposed to entering theever competitive market for graduate employment. For some dual income households it can be the case that a mixof full time, part time and self employment creates an ideal mixfor a sustainable financial model for the household. There is, however, a very real need for those making the boldand courageous move to go it alone, to be supported on theirjourney. Certainly those thinking of starting a business might findattending Start Up and Grow 2016 extremely beneficial. The eventwill take place on Tuesday 23rd February, in Lincoln. The order was securedthrough Ellis’ local distributor, ACJ High Volate Ltda. Tony Conroy, Ellis’ export sales director (pictured), said: “With mostexport specification news we tend to focus primarily on the details ofthe order, but in this instance it’s the fact that we’ve secured the orderthat commands the headline – the reason being that in Columbia weneeded to create a market for cable cleats rather than simply trying tosell our products into an existing one.”In order to achieve this, Ellis, which began exporting to Brazil in 2009and started targeting other Spanish-speaking Latin American countriesthree years later, needed to convince a sceptical local market of thebenefits of using cable cleats to secure power cables.
