At one end ofthe table, we have David Cameron and George Osbornewith “it was always going to be a long road – we’rehaving to make tough choices...” And on the other end ofthe table we have Ed Balls with his farcical argument that, with a wave of his magic wand and a bit of good oldKeynesian economics everything will be sorted.Cameron knows a few conjuring tricks too which hechose to bring into play recently. Call it sleight of hand, call it a deflectiontechnique, call it anything you like really but to be honest Debbie McGee could’vedone better. “Watch this hand, no not that one – this one here. See, its magic!”I am, of course, referring to the European Referendum which was, coincidentally, announced just as news broke about the UK potentially tippinginto a triple dip recession. Politicians have long mastered the art of deflection butthis latest announcement makes one wonder if the government have taken intoaccount what effect this suggestion might have on business confidence. Cleggcertainly seems less than impressed with the revelation.Don’t get me wrong, I love my country and am delighted we still have thepound but whatever you think about being in the Single Market, the cold, hardfigures show that most businesses would prefer to stay in it. Access to the SingleMarket brings with it opportunities for growth, more so as Europe recovers, andalthough detractors say it stifles competitiveness and the UK needs to be able toset its own rules, is now the time to be plunging already hamstrung businessesinto further uncertainty? So much for a fresh new start in 2013, I hear you say. But there are successstories despite our government’s failings. This month we look towards a brighterfuture with a special focus on the Lincolnshire Property and Business InvestmentShow which highlights the infrastructure projects that should help our region formany years to come. With the arrival of the Green Deal, we examine theopportunities for of local businesses to neutralise their carbon footprint.Good reading as always,W S FisherEditorEditorSteve Fisher (s.fisher@blmgroup.co.uk)JournalistsSteve Williams (s.williams@blmgroup.co.uk)Mike Shields (m.shields@blmgroup.co.uk)Michael Fisher (m.fisher@blmgroup.co.uk)Editorial contactnewsdesk@blmgroup.co.ukTel: (01472) 310305 Fax: (01472) 310317Sales DirectorTeri Cooper (t.cooper@blmgroup.co.uk)AdvertisingTel: (01472) 310310Kim Collins (k.collins@blmgroup.co.uk)Kelly Robertson (k.robertson@blmgroup.co.uk)Ashley Spink (a.spink@blmgroup.co.uk)Accounts & SubscriptionsAngela Sharman, Dawn Cook, John DownesTel: (01472) 310301 Fax: (01472) 310311Design & ProductionGary Jorgensen, Mark Casson, Rachel GreenTel: (01472) 310304 Fax: (01472) 310314(studio@blmgroup.co.uk)E-Mail:yorks-lincs@blmgroup.co.ukWebsitewww.blmforum.netAddressHaychart Ltd, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, N.E. TAXATIONCould you havepaid less tax on31st January?asks Erica Manderfield, Tax Manager, StreetsChartered AccountantsWith the Self Assessment deadline of31st January recently come and gone,it is likely that most, if not all, thosewith tax to pay will wish they had paidless. It may be hard to believe, butpaying more tax than you actually needto is a worryingly frequent occurrence. Experience does show a number ofcommon pitfalls whereby people findthey have paid either the wrongamount or worse, too much! Anothergrowing concern is the financialpenalties being levied for late filing anderrors made. Not only are HMRC more draconian in the penaltiesand fines it levies, but they are increasingly rigorous in imposingpenalties and investigating returns. It is possible, with support and advice of your taxation adviserand accountant, to avoid being caught by the taxman. The following are some simple steps to adopt:* Consult with your advisers as soon as you receive any formsor paperwork from HMRC.* Be timely, leaving the filing of your returns to the last minuteinherently runs the risk of inaccuracies.* Ensure you or your adviser appreciates the current taxregime, knowing which expenses are allowable or disallowable.* Ensure you keep all the appropriate paperwork. Otherwise anallowable expense can become one that you are not able tosubstantiate and therefore claim.* For those who do not prepare tax returns, particular care isrequired in checking their PAYE coding notices are correct. Forexample, coding may include benefits which have lapsed.* Don’t rely on HMRC’s calculation even if this shows arepayment due to you. It is more common than you might think forthe Revenue’s assessments and coding notices to be inaccurate.* Advise your accountant/tax advisor in advance of anypurchases or changes you are planning so your tax affairs can bearranged in advance of changes.Based on experience, through effective management andadvice, it is possible to only pay what you really need to. Whilstin the good times you may have felt more benevolent or paidless attention to how much tax you part with – though it isdifficult to believe this is the case – it is increasingly important totake professional advice in order to keep more of what you make.Erica Manderfield is a Tax Manager with Streets CharteredAccountants, a top 40 UK accountancy firm. Write to: Business Link Magazine, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire DN31 2QE or email: letters@blmgroup.co.ukReaders’LETTERSReaders’LETTERSTop of the classDear Sir,In these times of economic strife, it’s heartening to see the nextgeneration of business leaders are right on our doorstep. I am of coursereferring to the recent article on your web site regarding North Yorkshire’sschools and colleges rising to the very top of the national performancetable rankings. The fact that our county now ranks in the top ten per cent of localauthorities nationally for GCSE results, with the county’s schools improvingat a much faster rate than the national average is great news for our regionand perhaps goes some way to explaining why our region also continuesto outperform others in terms of economic performance.Education standards in Britain has long lagged behind that in Europe butthat is now being addressed. The belief used to be, of course, that studentscould simply go get a degree, along with a shedload of debt forthemselves, or their parents, and the world would be their oyster. Sadly, even those Oxbridge geniuses who could once toddle off to one of themany financial institutions are finding it hard to get a foot on the ladder. Soit’s great news for students and employers that schools can now be reliedupon once again to provide a decent level of education – who knows, wemight even be able to stem the brain drain from our region.R WilliamsYorkKeeping confidencesDear Sir,Alongside your article on how the debaterages as to how the recession – double ortriple – is affecting business confidence, surely UK industry was killed off by thevacuum of human capital in the UK. After all, every time foreign management was broughtin it improved. Bearing in mind how SMEs cling to Toryplans of worsening terms of employment byleaving the Social Chapter and introducingBeechcroft, it’s no wonder the combinationof British employees and employers is toxic.Northern Europe runs a trade surplus whileworking under the terms of the SocialChapter.A bad situation, debt driven and with poorhuman capital that requires foreigninvestment, has been made infinitely worseby a government that has placed uncertaintyover our relationship with the EU - one of theUK’s biggest markets and the biggest in theworld. I never thought I would think anyoneworse than Brown but there is no doubtOsborne is. The Tory myth of being good forbusiness and the economy is blown.Recently Larry Elliott opined that re-balancing the UK economy, with less relianceon debt and the financial services thatsupplies it, was a pipe dream. I think he’sprobably right. S YatesLeedsIn or out?Dear Sir,Of course it’s important Britain has access to the Europeanmarket – but not at any cost, and that’s the issue that businesseswish the government to address. That’s why I’m certain DavidCameron’s determination to negotiate a new settlement for Britainin Europe is the right things to do. We run a trade deficit with theEU, so it is not in Europe’s interest to see the UK go and we startfrom a strong negotiating position. It’s pretty clear mostbusinesses want to stay in the Single Market, but enjoying a newrelationship with Europe that promotes trade and competitiveness.R ThrelfallLincoln09:Layout 1 4/2/13 10:35 Page 1Next >
