It seems January showed anotherrecord month for the service sector and that, along with Sterling climbingagainst the dollar, is welcome news indeed.Since hitting 2.9 per cent in 2014, economic growth has slowedsignificantly, but it’s worth noting that UK PLC is still one of the fastestgrowing economies. But, to maintain this, our Government needs to come up with a morecoherent economic strategy. Economists are already pointing to the various profits warnings by largercompanies and the Government’s short term fixes. Burdens on SME’s in particularhave never been greater and there are rumbling concerns from business leaders inour region, not least of which revolve around the introduction of the new minimumwage and Britain’s membership in the EU, not to mention the introduction of autoenrolment. Our February issue will delve further into the matter – with a dedicated featureon auto enrolment and what it means for SME’s in our region. Beyond that we takea look at the burgeoning commercial property market, and how the constructionindustry is holding up.Yorkshire and Lincolnshire has long been an import and export hub for the UK,and this has led to increased strain on our ports. This month we analyse thevarious methods of materials handling available for the ports industry, and howthey can seek to balance efficiency with worker safety. Meanwhile our increaseddependence on electronic systems is discussed in our IT feature. Specifically looking at cybersecurity, an ever-increasing concern considering recent attacks on TalkTalk and other, morelocal, firms. However, only 10 per cent of all respondents find their officetoo hot to handle in the winter. Office temperature isn’t just a source of discomfort, it is also a sourceof unproductiveness. On average, employees spend around eightminutes each day acclimatising to the office environment. Eight minuteseach day wasted amounts to more than thirty hours a year, peremployee. The survey of 2,000 people, commissioned by Scunthorpe-basedAndrew Sykes, aimed to identify how much the winter chill and poorclimate control can harm productivity in the office environment. To putthe findings into perspective, in an office of 50 people, 6.5 hours arewasted every day because of climate control. This proves that climatecontrol harms productivity in the office environment.24 per cent of employees believe that their office was an idealtemperature for working throughout the year. This means that astaggering 76 per cent are not entirely comfortable with thetemperature. 6Business Link www.blmforum.netNEWSJob injection forLincoln’s economy Two hundred new jobs could be created in Lincoln, following thelaunch of a new business park, which has the potential to attract morethan £25 million worth of investment to the south of the city. Well you might thinkthat the deadline hascome and gone andnothing will happen butthis is not the case. Allof those people whoshould and haven’t filed a tax return will face an automatic fine of£100. Further fines, penalties and interest will occur for thosethat fail to complete their return after 3, 6 and 12 months. This isunless you contact the HMRC with a reasonable excuse, along thelines deemed to be acceptable by them and posted on theirwebsite. The best approach is to ensure you complete and file yourreturn without delay, with a full explanation in the ‘white space’as to why it is late. To avoid further interest accruing and a 5%surcharge on any tax payable you will need to ensure that any taxdue is paid before the 2 March 2016. However, you will still get a£100 fine for late filing and a small interest charge on paymentsthat should have been made by 31 January 2016.Not only will you incur the fixed penalty for not filing a return, those who file after 3 months from the 31 January deadline willbe subject to a daily penalty of £10, up to a maximum of £900. Ifyou are 6 months late with your return and payment, you thenface a financial penalty of £300 or 5% of the overall tax. If you areover 12 months late you face a further fine of £300 or a further5% charge of the overall tax liability. No “capping” applies tothese penalties. Interest will also be added for late payment. If you have an accountant or a tax adviser seek their advice. You may find that paying for this may be cheaper than any finesyou could face and at least it will hopefully feel better value formoney. You may too, if you are perhaps a little tardy in dealingwith your affairs, wish to consider taking out Tax Enquiry FeeProtection – a policy which will pay for professional fees thatresult from most types of HMRC enquiry or investigation.
