Doncaster Council has formally opposed plans for a large solar development spanning three South Yorkshire sites, including land near Conisbrough. The Whitestone Solar Farm project aims to generate enough power for around 250,000 homes.
Councillors backed a motion urging the developer to withdraw the plans and reduce the scale of any future proposals. The motion secured cross-party support, reflecting ongoing concerns about the use of agricultural land and the project’s potential local impact.
The proposal is being assessed as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project. Final approval rests with the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband.
Whitestone Solar Farm recently completed a six-week statutory consultation, gathering feedback from residents and stakeholders. The developer has confirmed that it is reviewing the responses and updating its plans. It has also outlined a proposed annual community benefit package valued at £300,000.
Defence Secretary John Healey, MP for Rawmarsh and Conisbrough, has publicly opposed the project.
City of Doncaster Council has previously stated that future renewable infrastructure should prioritise rooftop installations and brownfield sites over productive farmland.
