Family firm’s investment in expansion signals new jobs

Family builders’ merchant Turnbull & Co is investing around £1 million in a move which promises to create new jobs in Lincoln.

The company, which has been trading for nearly 125 years – and which already employs 200 staff – said its decision to expand to the City means it will be looking to take on another 15 to 20 people.

Chartered surveyor Banks Long & Co – which marketed the premises jointly with LSH Lincoln – acted for a private client in leasing the former Stagecoach depot in the city’s Deacon Road to Turnbull, a diverse business based in Sleaford with eight trading sites across the East Midlands including Boston, Spalding, Newark and Brigg.

Turnbull Director Chris Hopkins said Lincoln is a natural next step for the company, which serves primarily trade customers from branches dealing with building, timber, plumbing, heating, kitchens and bathrooms.

He said: “Lincoln fits in well with our plans for growth. Our new base will focus on plumbing and heating supplies, and will incorporate a 7,000 sq ft state-of-the-art kitchen and bathroom showroom.

“We are planning to open our plumbing and heating department, which will have a trade counter, in mid-May, and our bathroom and kitchen showroom, which will be built over two floors, will follow in the summer.”

Banks Long & Co Director William Wall said: “We are delighted to have assisted Turnbull with its expansion to Lincoln.

“The former Stagecoach headquarters enjoys a prominent corner position in Deacon Road and provides the company with 20,716 square feet of space over two floors, as well as good yard space.

“The unit is well-placed for easy access to the city’s busy Outer Circle Road and there are complementary companies based in the locality. We wish Turnbull the best for the future.”

Lambert Smith Hampton Associate Director Matt Johnson said: “The new premises will provide Turnbull & Co with a well postioned property, in an established trade counter location. It is pleasing to see a company with Turnbull & Co’s stature and local historic links, continuing its expansion and creating jobs in the local economy.”
