Development company, S Harrison, will start work demolishing a former packaging site on James Street in York next month, after plans were approved for a new multi-million Lidl supermarket.
Work will begin in November, with a plan to open the new store next summer. The supermarket will be Lidl’s second in the area, following the opening of its store on Thanet Road in February 2011.
York-based S Harrison has worked closely with site owner Perio News Limited and Lidl UK, on the scheme which will create up to 40 new jobs at the new store. Plans for the supermarket also detail 130 parking spaces and four bays for electric vehicle charging.
Ann Scott, from S Harrison, said: “We are delighted to secure planning permission for this development, which will deliver a significant investment, as well as creating jobs in this part of York. The site has languished for many years, and to have the opportunity to create a long-term, economically sustainable development is fantastic for both James Street, and York as a whole.”
