Grimsby Town get the rub of the green with new eco-friendly energy deal

Grimsby Town FC has gone green by cutting its energy use through working with Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire, a council-led scheme to help businesses cut carbon emissions.

An old heating system at the club’s Blundell Park stadium has been replaced with a new, highly-efficient zonal controlled one with the help of grant funding from the project.

Nick Dale, stadium manager at Grimsby Town, said: “As a business, we wanted to be more energy efficient and reduce our carbon footprint. We got in touch with Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire to help us and as a result, we have a new system which is going to dramatically recuce our bills.

“The work has had a really positive reponse from everyone at the club as all of the rooms in the building now get warm.

“As a football club at the heart of the Grimsby community, we hope our example will inspire other businesses to reduce their energy consumption and their carbon footprint and help save the planet.”

Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire is a three-year programme which aims to bring the success of green business seen locally through growth in offshore renewables to companies across all sectors working onshore.

It offers free advice, workshops and grants for improvement works to tackle rising levels of carbon dioxide and the cost of energy bills.

Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire Programme Manager Helen Norris said: “Grimsby Town are a great example of a business which has worked with us to save energy, save carbon and save money.

“Their new heating system is much more efficient which means the team will not only be warmer but the stadium will cost less to heat.

“All businesses, whatever they do, use energy but we can help make changes which are good for the environment and for profits.”

The £9.2m Smart Energy Greater Lincolnshire programme is being run across Greater Lincolnshire by North East Lincolnshire Council until March 2021.

The council was awarded £5.4m funding from the European Regional Development Fund to deliver the project, alongside private sector investment.
