Family-run Sheffield engineering specialist SCX Ltd – the company behind the sliding pitch at the new Spurs stadium and court roofing at Wimbledon – is in the running for its most prestigious award to date.

Its design, engineering and installation of large-scale moving structures has resulted in it making the shortlist in the innovation category of The Lloyds Bank National Business Awards 2019.

The SCX group, based in Wincobank, has enjoyed success in several local, regional and national awards over the past couple of years.

Its bespoke engineering arm, SCX Special Projects, has successfully delivered the world’s first dividing retractable pitch for Tottenham Hotspur. This means that Premier League football, NFL American football, Gallagher Premiership rugby, plus other events such as concerts and exhibitions, can all take place at Spurs’ new multi-use venue.

Meanwhile it designed, engineered and installed a retractable roof for Wimbledon No.1 Court – ten years after its similar roof for Centre Court – that was used for the first time in this summer’s Championships, guaranteeing play whatever the weather.

Now the company’s sector-leading expertise in the disciplines of mechanical and electrical engineering have resulted it being on a shortlist of ten in The Lloyds Bank National Business Awards.

The competition highlights the best of British business and is open to any UK organisation regardless of size, attracting a large volume of entries.

Winners of the National Business Awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 12th.

The family-run SCX group, which was founded in Sheffield in 1972, has more than 160 employees and has seen substantial growth across its three businesses: engineering experts SCX Special Projects; national crane service provider Street CraneXpress; and wholesale distributor of electrical control gear Burnand XH.

SCX group chairman Simon Eastwood said: “Our culture is to encourage growth through innovation at all levels of the business, not just in the solutions we deliver to our customers, but also in how we work with each other. It’s a great feeling to see this being recognised beyond the engineering sector, in the context of industry at large.

“This latest shortlisting means we are in the running for our most prestigious national award so far and is further evidence of the world-class talent of our engineers and other employees across our business.”
