Looking to provide a little fun in some rather dark times, this Time Out, coming ahead of the bank holiday weekend, features Arsalan Karim, Yorkshireman and co-founder of Clinova, the global healthcare company, who are currently supplying facemasks to combat COVID-19.
What is the first thing you would usually do to get the weekend started?
It is normally having a run in the Yorkshire Dales, but these are not normal times. I find the combination of the beautiful countryside, Yorkshire at its most glorious, and the joy of running, to be irresistible. This is the perfect way to shed the pressures of the working week and to ease into the weekend.
What is your hobby?
My main key hobbies are hiking and reading – one physical and one mental. They complement each other perfectly. Hiking gives me the ideal opportunity to explore and enjoy many of Yorkshire’s wonderful rural assets and reading allows me to relax and switch off.
What is your favourite movie?
A Good Year, the romantic comedy directed by Ridley Scott. It has a great cast including Russell Crowe, Tom Hollander, Freddie Highmore and Albert Finney, and wonderful cinematography. The film is set in France and loosely based on Peter Mayle’s novel of the same name. A tremendous feelgood movie.
If you hadn’t been successful at what you do, what would you be doing instead as a career?
I would have liked to have been an architect. The combination of scientific rigour and artistic creation is very appealing. I never cease to marvel at the beauty of our buildings here in Yorkshire and in London, where the mix of old and new is simply stunning.
If you could have any superpower what would it be?
I would go back in time and discover how and why some of the greatest scientific inventions, specifically to do with health, occurred. In our own modest way, Clinova has created O.R.S. Hydration Tablets, which add an electrolyte mix to water that helps your body quickly absorb fluids and restores a healthy level of hydration. They are currently used by Tottenham Hotspur.
What is your favourite genre of music?
Perhaps unusually for someone of my generation, I love classical music. It’s a difficult choice, but ultimately my favourite composer is Tchaikovsky.
If you could travel to any moment in time where would you go?
I had tremendous fun being an undergraduate between 2000 and 2005. It was then I met Charles Ebubedike at the School of Pharmacy at University of Portsmouth. We became best friends at once, sharing a love not just of pharmacy, but also of the history of health innovations – and of football. We were later to found Clinova together. Happy times, working hard – but also enjoying student life. Those experiences have shaped everything that has happened to us since.
