Waterside Centre defies national high street slump

Lincoln’s Waterside Shopping Centre defied a national slump on the high street in 2018, seeing a rise of 5.7% compared to an average UK decrease in footfall of more than 3%.

December’s footfall figures were 60% up on the previous month, fuelled by the arrival of Skechers, Lincoln’s only city-centre Santa’s Grotto, partnering with the BBC as a venue on its Christmas Premieres Tour and a range of Christmas events and local partnerships.

Waterside’s general manager Dean Cross said: “The results for 2018 demonstrated that the centre’s commitment to attracting popular retailers, such as Topman, Topshop and Skechers, and investment in improving the centre’s layout, was a successful formula. Nationally, 2018 saw 12 consecutive months of footfall decline, so we are very proud to have bucked this trend.”
