Everywhere we looked therewere new models and newtechnology at play. As one would expect, manufacturers were keen todemonstrate their green credentialsunderscoring rising trends in greentechnology and there were plenty ofgroundbreaking concept cars. In factthere were over two dozen greenvehicles featured, including modelsfrom, BMW, Honda, Hyundai,Mercedes-Benz, Porsche andVolkswagen to name a few – theseranged from alternative fuel modelsto brand new plug-ins.Interestingly, in the luxury carsegment alone there were sometwenty vehicle debuts - a clearsignal of increased buyer confidencein an improving economicenvironment. So, without further ado, feast youreyes over these images to get aglimpse of what the future might holdat dealerships around the region. Business Link 43www.blmforum.netAUTOLINK42-43:Layout 1 19/12/13 14:01 Page 2AUTOLINK44Business Link www.blmforum.netOne particularly striking feature is theadoption of a turbocharged engine forthis BMW M model: the high-revving,3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine withM TwinPower Turbo technology hasbeen specifically developed for thispurpose, and produces an impressivemaximum output of 431hp. BMW M engineers have paidparticular attention to the car’saerodynamic performance, andincorporated the latest Active MDifferential amongst numerous othertechnical highlights. During thedevelopment process, engineersworked closely with BMW Motorsport’sprofessional racing drivers, withextensive testing and set-up workcarried out on the NürburgringNordschleife circuit. The balance of the overall conceptseems to be high power, low weightand driving pleasure. Both saloon and coupé are formedfrom a host of blended elements, allworking in perfect harmony to deliveroutstanding performance, precision andagility on road and track. With the new models, air around thecar has been channelled in such a wayas to provide improved performance, while also ensuring the engine, powertrain and brakes receive therequisite cooling. The aggressively-styled front apron, smooth under-bodyand the clearly defined lip spoiler at therear of the M3 Saloon (or integratedbootlid spoiler at the rear of the BMWM4 Coupé) reduce lift by an equalamount at the front and rear axle, tomake handling easier and moreresponsive.A sporting engine sound, in keepingwith BMW M tradition, is ensuredthanks to the lofty rev range of the newengine and an innovations in the twin-pipe exhaust system. The electrically-controlled flaps just before the rearsilencer minimise exhaust backpressureand produce a sound that is striking andunmistakable over the entire enginespeed range, as well as giving precisefeedback on engine load. The M Dynamic Mode – a sub-function of the Dynamic StabilityControl system – allows enthusiasticdrivers to test the limits of the new carswhile retaining an electronic safety netat all times. The system toleratesgreater wheel slip and therefore allowsfor easy drifting, although it will step inif the car ventures over the limits, unless switched off completely. An unwavering attention to detail hasmade these new models engineered tobe at ease on the road or on the track, but it’s probably its aesthetics that pushit to potential interested parties. Viewedfrom the front, both iterations have apowerfully expressive ‘face’, with amodern take on the twin headlightarrangement and a distinctive double-slat kidney grille. Among the other hallmark BMW Mdesign features is the characteristicpowerdome on the bonnet, which hintsat the potential of the muscular enginebeneath and creates space for theintercooler. The twin-stalk side mirrorsare another classic BMW M designfeature. The sides of both cars clearly showthe hallmark BMW proportions of a longbonnet, long wheelbase, set backglasshouse and short front overhang, further emphasised by familiar Mdesign elements. The new M side gillsfor example perform both a stylistic anda functional role: integrated into themare Air Breathers, which team up withthe Aero Curtains in the front apron tohelp optimise the airflow around thewheel arches and therefore improveaerodynamics. The dark colour of the CFRP roof, with a contoured roofline, gives bothmodels a lower-slung and morecompact appearance. The eye thenperceives the roof pillars – painted inbody colour – to be the uppermostpoint of the car. A flowing rooflinethen gains in momentum onceagain as it heads rearwards, increasing aerodynamicdownforce and giving the rear amore muscular look at the sametime. At the rear, there are greaterdifferences in the two models. The BMW M3 Saloon is fittedwith a lip spoiler to reduce lift, while the tailgate of the BMW M4Coupé features an integrated rearspoiler and is made from a carbon-fibre compound.Driver assistance was obviouslySelf-referentialdeferenceThe launch of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupéheralds an arrival of the fifth-generation of the iconic high-performance sports car from BMW M and there’s a definite tip of thehat to its original iterations. 44-45:Layout 1 19/12/13 14:28 Page 1Business Link 45www.blmforum.netAUTOLINKon the engineers’ minds and among thehighlights are the latest-generation ofthe Professional Navigation system, offering extra capability, sharpergraphics and 3D elements for the mapdisplay. It also features DrivingAssistant Plus, which warns drivers of alooming collisions with a pedestrians. The LED headlights are also adaptive, with an intelligentanti-dazzle high-beam assistant and auseful Active Cruise Control with Stop &Go function. Overall, these two delightfulspecimens are great additions to thesaloon and coupe offerings we’ve seenrecently. If you can’t feel in control of acar with this much power, then weworry for everyone else. The balance ofthe overallconcept seemsto be high power, low weight anddriving pleasure44-45:Layout 1 19/12/13 14:28 Page 2EVENTSBuy Doncaster Business ClubTuesday 28th January, Earl of Doncaster HotelBuy Doncaster Business Club offers the opportunity to meetafter the workday is over with likeminded business people whilenetworking over a light buffet.
