Freight forwarding company R.M. Maritime, has chosen ABP to handle the steel destined to be used in the construction industry in the UK. The first shipment saw ABP discharge over 12,579 tonnes of steel beams from the 147-metre-long New Age vessel. Your email is the weakest point in most security strategies. It’s a direct route into your business for threats like ransomware, scams, phishing and other malware. To protect your business, you should create an email security risk management strategy which considers: 1. Raising awareness of email security issues - educating your staff on cyber security will reduce the risk of a breach. 2. Preventing malicious email attachments from reaching your environment – programmes such as Mimecast scan attachments for malware. 3. Using a robust email security gateway - emails are scanned revealing hidden programs that could go unnoticed. Email security should be a business priority, and it needs checking regularly as things can change quickly in the world of cyber security. Effective communication is essential in achieving these three aims and we can deliver the right message to the right person at the right time to make the right decision. Not only does this help to save time but helps keep costs down. It really is a win-win situation. Our growing team of software developers create solutions that are capable of alarm and incident management. They can link to fire, security and plant alarms to ensure a fast and appropriate response to any given incident. Needless to say, this is critical for manufacturing companies where false alarms and machine or production line failures cost thousands per minute to resolve. We’re not just blowing our own trumpet here, but in situations like these, time really is money and GlobalView can minimise this negative impact. To give a bit more context, linking to fire panels and providing full real-time notifications offers the ability to react faster. Discovering false alarms or reduce potential impact of any incident. Advanced lone worker and mass notification software also complete the increasing range of solutions. The efficient and swift delivery of critical notifications (regardless if you have two-way radio push to talk over cellular (PoC) or smart phone) is central to what we do. In this way we can help set minds at ease and ensure emergency preparedness, minimising the impact of any incident or emergency on any business. Although you’re based in Hull, your software is installed on some of the largest yachts in the world. How do you secure these international customers? We’ve been supporting the superyacht industry for the last fifteen years and our specialist VesselWatch Marine software now protects some of the wealthiest and most influential people in the world. We also maintain close links with yacht builders and re-fitters across Mainland Europe. All of this ensures that we remain competitive and sought after. You have a growing portfolio of systems and an impressive pipeline of clients from manufacturing to the NHS. Tell us about a recent contract win. I know you probably hear this a lot, but in our case it’s true. We’re lucky enough to work with such a diverse and growing range of clients meaning no two situations are ever the same. Some recent projects, for example, have led us to work with major UK sporting venues, universities and also RIX Shipping. On a national level, we recently won a contract with a major global utility company. Working closely with them to ensure effective communications from the control room to the onsite team in a safety critical environment. How is the growing successes and scope of GlobalView Systems benefiting the local region and industry? We’re not only based in Hull, we’re passionate about it. It’s not just us either, with the city becoming a major focus for technological talent in the UK. We’ve got a ready-made pipeline of talent right on our doorstep and as we continue to expand and our numbers increase, we’re keen to recruit locally and develop young local talent. We’re a keen supporter of the Goodwin Trust which are doing some amazing work here in Hull. In the local area, we have recently had the pleasure of working closely with the portering team at Castle Hill and Hull Royal Infirmary and recently installed a system to assist in the effective flow of patients and equipment. Being able to directly impact on our local services and industry is important to us and whilst our projects take us worldwide, we are always looking to do more to positively impact our local area. What does the future hold for GlobalView Systems? It should come as no surprise that we’re currently looking very carefully at how trading between the UK and Europe develops over the coming months. But despite that, the future is looking bright for GlobalView. In this changing social climate, our software is becoming more and more relevant. Mass notification and the ability to send simultaneous notifications over many communications methods, means it is becoming essential for retained resilience. GlobalView will continue to be at the forefront of innovative developments to ensure business continuity and ultimately saving lives. Forward-thinking property companies, investors and high net worth individuals should be recognising the opportunities that Brexit is throwing into the property market right now. Immediately after the referendum vote, those that were prepared could react quickly to the market and take advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves. The saying that ‘success is where preparation and opportunity meet’ will definitely be true over the next twelve months. Generally, the UK’s underlying economy is strong, storage options, as well as Grade A and secondary accommodation, and there is certainly going to be a shortage of this type of space throughout 2019 and beyond. But don’t just take our word for it, with property experts from across the region offering their insight into what the next twelve months has in store for us. which should translate into solid prospects for commercial property investors that arm themselves with sound advice. We’re continuing to see ever-increasing investor interest surrounding logistics as an asset class, and there’s certainly plenty of capital available for financially robust opportunities. Plus, the basic rules of supply and demand are also heavily tipped in the market’s favour going into 2019. There’s very little speculative development happening in the industrial market and not much quality space available, so tenant appetite is strong. However, we are starting to see an increased mix of opportunities available. Can’t see any real change in the early part of 2019. We continue to see an increasingly strong commercial market, with many of the major towns and cities across the UK seeing an upturn in office lets, especially in Leeds with Channel 4 set to call it their home. However, outside of the major cities, it is acknowledged that there is a decline in the office market. Viability also continues to be challenging in these markets. Residential sales have been generally strong and in line with market expectations. However, there is evidence that buyers are becoming more cautious as we move into 2019, due to the current geopolitical uncertainty. This will likely continue into 2019 at least until the likely outcome of Brexit is better known, with markets stabilising as a result. Developers will need to carefully consider the implications when Help to Buy ends in April 2023 with a change in the caps coming in 2021, as this will likely change the product / tenure mix when identifying and looking at new schemes. We are encouraged by the proactive stance of Homes England in their promotion of residential opportunities across the country. Generally think that the market will continue as it is, with caution building as Brexit further evolves. There is a degree of uncertainty around at the moment, with investors pausing for thought until a way through can be seen. However, a level of uncertainty brings a level of opportunity as innovation and stronger partnerships to create a collaborative culture will be key. Those who can seek out bespoke solutions with a dynamic approach to meet the needs of the changing landscape will be ahead of the game in 2019. Keith Hardman, Head of Cushman & Wakefield’s Leeds Office Relocations from south to north (Burberry, Channel 4, Talk Talk to name a few which have announced or implemented plans in the past 12 months) will gather pace as businesses look to improve staff retention, reduce operating costs and improve competitive advantage against the backdrop of economic uncertainty in the post-Brexit era. The South Bank area in Leeds will be one of the main beneficiaries of this. The Chancellor will introduce more radical funding measures to address the decline of many town and city centres and to expedite the changes required to reverse this. Measures will go some considerable way beyond the £675 million announced in November’s Budget for the Future High Streets Fund. A sales tax will be introduced with a Business Rates offset i.e. targeted at online retailers, where the tax revenues will be directly invested in transforming town centres. Leeds United will also win promotion to the Premier League. Tim Cameron-Jones, International Partner, Capital Markets at Cushman & Wakefield in Leeds I think we will have a very hesitant Q1, with many investors adopting a ‘wait and see’ attitude until the end of March. However irrespective of the conclusions to Brexit negotiations, after March I believe that domestic investors will continue to be the biggest influence on the UK regional markets and the weight of money will mean that acquisition activity will pick up in the second half of 2019. The structural shift in retail patterns will continue, with logistics units continuing to grow in importance in retailer’s sales channels. Demand is likely to remain strong for units close to urban areas as well as the growth in parcel depots and larger retail-based distribution units.Muse’s Logic Leeds development 14-17.qxp_Layout 1 04/02/2019 11:48 Page 4© Shutterstock/A_Lesik18 Business Link www.blmforum.net An engineering region ENGINEERING SPOTLIGHTENGINEERING SPOTLIGHT18-21.qxp_Layout 1 04/02/2019 13:52 Page 1Businesses and manufacturers across the region are placing increased importance on engineering as they look for ways to increase efficiency on the production line. The importance of avoiding excessive waste and getting products to market faster than ever before has led to many companies investing heavily in new technology. Because consumers are demanding higher quality products in increasingly large quantities, the industry has had to find ways to increase productivity without extending timescales or ramping up costs. This is no mean feat, of course, but the widespread use of technology is helping to hasten the production process without compromising quality. Figures show that 75% of UK manufacturing is situated within a four-hour drive of the Humber; therefore, it is no surprise that advancements in engineering play a key part in the region. There are many industrial processes that can be made more efficient by using new and improved technology, ranging from traditionally manual tasks such as cutting and cleaning to more modern procedures such as automated production lines. Automation is one of the best ways to make savings in a manufacturing environment.
