Indeed, as well setting out the roadmap out of the current national lockdown, we now have the Budget to help the economy along that journey. The headline announcement is that the furlough scheme is being extended to the end of September – three months longer than the current planned removal of all restrictions. Moreover, the Chancellor also announced that an additional 600,000 of the newly self- employed will now be eligible for state financial help. The aim, he said, was to see the economy emerge from this lockdown without triggering mass unemployment and a wave of business failures. With these measures in place, and with a clear signal from government to ramp up the economy this summer, we might just achieve that aim. If plans go ahead, Siemens Gamesa will dramatically extend its facility on Alexandra Dock from 36,000 sq m to 77,600 sq m to support the growing North Sea wind energy industry. The proposed development will be dependent on government support and Siemens Gamesa securing work for the next phase of development on the offshore wind farms. It could see blades in excess of 100 metres being developed in Hull. Councillor Daren Hale, Hull City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Investment and Regeneration, said: “This is thrilling news for Hull and if this goes ahead it will help to further cement the city’s position at the forefront of the green economy revolution.” 6 Business Link www.blmforum.net NEWS AMRC and LISI Aerospace secures £975k for smart factory production line LISI Aerospace (BAI UK) and the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) have jointly secured £975,000 in funding from the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) to unlock productivity gains, new markets and reduce waste in the fastener industry through the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies. The aim is to deliver a smart, dynamic manufacturing line that minimises waste, improves worker safety and efficiency, and sets a new benchmark for productivity in the aerospace fastener industry. “The investment shows that BAI UK are committed to advancing the fastener industry with a unique and impactful approach; the award of ATI funding adds credibility to that ethos,” said Mark Capell, General Manager of BAI UK. Venari Group to produce lightweight ambulance with Ford Brighouse-based Venari Group is teaming up with Ford to produce a new lightweight Transit ambulance as the carmaker looks to re-establish its presence in the UK ambulance market. Scheduled to enter production in mid-2021, the new vehicle’s lightweight design is fully compliant with the national specification advocated by the Lord Carter Report, offering all the equipment and capability of a front-line ambulance within a 3.5-tonne gross vehicle weight. Based on the Ford Transit chassis cab, the body and conversion will be built wholly in the UK by Venari Group – parent company of ambulance manufacturer, O&H Vehicle Technology. Project Siren used an agile, collaborative process and direct customer input from NHS Ambulance Trusts to create the new vehicle, which is designed to improve patient treatment as well as safety and ease of use for paramedics. The vehicle’s launch will follow detailed testing and validation at Ford’s advanced proving facilities. © AMRC & LISI Aerospace 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 15/03/2021 11:15 Page 1www.blmforum.net Business Link 7 NEWS Major milestone for £6.8bn Asda takeover The consortium purchasing Asda has completed its £6.8 billion acquisition of the Leeds-headquartered supermarket from US owner Walmart. The business has created a new electrostatic hand-held fogger – called the Hurricane ES – which can be used to disperse disinfectant across potentially contaminated surfaces quickly and easily. It uses electrostatic technology to charge tiny droplets of disinfectant solution to create an ultra-low volume fog. The electrostatically charged micro particles repel each other as they are dispersed into the atmosphere at high speeds, delivering consistent coverage and stronger contact with all surfaces for optimum cleaning. Initially made in Jackson USA by the group’s American-based business Curtis Dyna-fog, Pelsis Group now plans to localise production of the fogger at its UK facility in Knaresborough to fulfil domestic and European demand.
