It’s abusy time for accountants andbookmakers across the region, and forcompanies who might struggle withdisorganised systems and out-of-datesoftware. No month brings with it thesame degree of upheaval. It’s also atime to look to the future, however, and although many budgets will havebeen allocated already, it’s a time ofspending and investment. The market itself remains robust, despite the doom and gloom predictedas a result of the Brexit. Article 50 hasbeen triggered and at this time, negotiations are underway – or notunderway, as the Government seemsto decide. The key issue appears to bethat of whether we hold negotiationson the divorce settlement first, or inparallel talks with trade agreements. The UK Government wants paralleltalks, which will be far better for theUK, but it’s difficult to fault the EU forwanting them to be separate, either.Look how long it took to organise atrade agreement between Canada andthe EU (2009 – 2016) and thenimagine the same for the UK, butbeing held alongside other talks as tothe security of EU nationals within theUK border. It’s easy to see why holdingthem apart would be easier, butThe magazine that caresWe carebecause we want to leave our world a better place than we found itBusiness Linkbelieves that being socially and environmentally responsible is the key tomaintaining a flourishing business that our customers will be pleased to use and our staff willbe proud to be part of.Community- From a very local point of view, we strive to be a ‘good neighbour’. We also extendthat into the much broader local community, through financial support of local causes andcharities. Environment- Our actions extend to: conservation of energy and natural resources, minimisationof waste and ensuring our trading partners do likewise. From theEditorThe key issueappears to bethat of whetherwe holdnegotiations onthe divorcesettlement first,or in parallel talkswith tradeagreementsperhaps a long delay is exactly what theUK Government is looking for. Without our region, however, concernstend to be a little more local, as is thefocus for our April issue of the BusinessLink Magazine. This month we take alook at the Northern Powerhouse, andwhat role our region has to play withinthis economic opportunity. We alsoinvestigate the skills gap and howapprenticeships and training are aimingto fill the gap.Alongside that, we look into staffhealthcare and how it can influence theworkforce, carbon capture and storageas a potential solution to a company’scarbon footprint – and also factoryautomation and the role it has to play inour manufacturing industry. All that along with up-to-date news, topical advice pieces, commercialproperty and more in this, our April issueof Business Link.Good reading as always.Michael FisherEditor03_Layout 1 03/04/2017 13:53 Page 1CONTENTSAPRIL 20176NewsCatch up with the latest business news from around our region11LettersReaders’ letters and replies 13PropertyThe commercial property market has remained robust, even in theface of numerous challenges17Carbon footprint is something we’ve been hearing about for over adecade now, but are any companies truly taking steps to reduce it– or is it just smoke in our ears?20PortsOur region is well-placed to benefit from its ports, but it dependson continual investment and innovation24Factory automationDespite sparking concerns of mass unemployment, automation is aviable solution to the skills shortage as well as creating a stringer, more competitive Britain28Healthcare might incur some extra expense in ensuring workersare kept fit and safe, but the effect an unhealthy worker oruninspired workforce can have on a company’s bottom line can befar more costly and damaging32Northern powerhouseSpun out of the Coalition Government, and fronted by once andformer Chancellor George Osborne, The Northern Powerhouseaimed to boost economic growth in the North of England and sawthe Tories curry favour with Northern voters36Apprenticeships and trainingIt’s undeniable that many industries face a skills shortage, but isthe answer really to take on new people – or can we train and up-skill those we already have?40AutoLinkSeriously souped-up SUVs, luxury debuts, concept cars and moreunveilings from mainstream manufacturers than you could possiblyimagine, were just too much for us to pass up on.
