More encouragingly, a third offirms say that current customers expanding has been their primarysource of new contracts. Many respondents point to over-capacity in the market, combinedwith price challenges from larger multi-national providers for theincrease in competition. Operators also point to a continuingsqueeze on prices by customers as well as competitors. The surveyresults suggest that major retailers and manufacturers areincreasingly likely to shop around to meet their price and serviceexpectations, with the result that pricing expectations are becomingincreasingly demanding.Promotions strengthenboard at Reed Boardall Boroughbridgetemperature controlledstorage and distributionbusiness Reed Boardall isstrengthening its board withthe appointment of SarahRoberts as finance directorand Marcus Boardall asdeputy chief executive.Sarah, who is a charteredmanagement accountantwith CIMA and an AATfellow, joined Reed Boardallin 2014 as head of finance. She has considerableexperience within the FMCGsector and has previously held positions as financial controller and finance director at aregional bakery chain. PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COMsee many companies, large and small, running distribution centres in theregion. Managing these distributioncentres efficiently can be a commonproblem faced by many companies, and new advances in the industry areseized upon by operators. The benefits of fully automatedwarehouses, which remove or minimisethe need for human employees infavour of robotics and automatedsystems, is one particular hot topic. The arguments for moving towardsfully automated warehouses are manyand varied. One of the largest elementsis obviously the goal of reducing costs.Whilst wages have fallen or beenstagnant across most regions, this trendis certainly not going to be a permanentone. Being able to remove employeesfrom the picture could therefore save acompany significant money. It wouldalso cut out other related costs, such asholidays, payroll, HR, and legal matters. It’s worth noting that automatedwarehouses don’t truly attempt to livein a world where humans don’t existentirely. There is likely to be a teammonitoring an automated warehousefrom another location, ensuring thateverything runs efficiently and runningthe warehouse. But even then, the costsof having a few centralised control10-13_Layout 1 01/06/2015 13:07 Page 3www.blmforum.netBusiness Link 13instance, it is a relatively simple affairto move the racking around, designatethe space to a different sector, rent outthe space – or even just cut down onthe size of the workforce to save costs. With a fully automated system this justisn’t quite so simple. Excess equipmentcould be sold for some quick capital, but that just leaves the warehouseunable to pick back up if salesincrease, while leaving half of thewarehouse inoperable will only resultin marginal savings in terms of energycosts. Ultimately, many companies areforced to adapt some kind of balance, reaping the benefits of automatedsystems where they can, while alsokeeping a certain degree of manuallabour in place to work around it. Whilethere is no telling if in the future theindustry can adapt more effectivemeans of fully automating warehouses, for now the decision is a difficult anddemanding one for logistics anddistribution managers.teams would be far less than havingteams at every single distributioncentre. Also by cutting out manpower thereis less risk for accidents or mistakes. While `to err may be human` is all welland good, it’s not something that willplacate major customers who haven’treceived their shipment on time, or whonow have lost or damaged stock.Automated systems reduce the chanceof human error. Of course they do notcompletely remove the potential foraccidents, such as a wooden palletsplintering – a fully automated systemhowever, cannot be injured by theresultant mess.Space is another benefit to anautomated system. Walkways andmezzanine floors can be unnecessary ifa distribution centre is set out properly.Aisles could theoretically be removedentirely if a warehouse was to use roof-mounted shuttles or cranes to movegoods about. But even if a companypreferred to use remote-operatedforklifts, there would be lessrequirements in terms of the width ofaisle – a remote forklift unit of coursenot needing to be as wide as a normalone, due to its lack of a driver cabin. However the most obvious reason forlooking towards automation in thewarehouse will always be productivity.Workers will always be ruled by thephysical limitations of the human body, while machines do not suffer the samefatigue. An automated system cancontinue running for 24 hours a day, without the need for changing teams, shifts and breaks. For many retailerswho operate online stores and delivery, this enables companies to have moreflexible cut-off times for deliveries, improving customer relations andperhaps even making them a moreattractive choice for consumers. With all that in mind, it might beworth asking why more distributioncentres in the region aren’t already fullyautomated, if the benefits are sopowerful. It is not solely an issue ofcost, as many powerful companies rundistribution centres in the region, whowould have more than enough capital toafford automated warehouses. Of course, costs will always remain animportant factor. A fully automatedwarehouse system requires not onlyspecialist machinery and software, butalso a lot of planning and preparation. For existing warehouses it might meanalteration, or removal of all existingsystems, which would lead to a lot ofwastage. While for new builds, there isalready such high investment beingutilised for distribution centres thatadding another facet to the mix in whatis already a tough economic climate, simply isn’t desirable. Return oninvestment tends to be a little slowerwith fully automated systems, despitehigh labour costs. On top of that there are also concernsabout the flexibility of automatedsystems vs their more standardcounterparts. When creating a newwarehouse there is always thepossibility that sales fall, or the space isnot fully utilised in some way.
