The reason for this, of course, is that as quickly as we learn the downsides toleaving, we learn the downsides for staying. The Brexit camp suggest looking to the long term about where the EU is going, leaving us asking who wants to be a small part of a United States of Europe withno say on our laws, taxes, or who comes into what was once our country. Add to that the costly red tape and regulations emanating from Brussels, whichmany of the readers we’ve spoken to say hampers them from being able toinnovate and create jobs, and it all makes a compelling argument. Those arguing against leaving, however, stress that a Brexit would hit trade, limit the size and skills-base of the labour market, affect long-term productivity andsubstantially reduce inward investment, and that’s just for starters. TheOrganisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has warned thata Brexit could tip the world back into another deep downturn. Cameron is throwing every argument under the sun for remaining, but whenyou see the income of EU bureaucrats and the likelihood of him enjoying careerprospects in the EU then one has to wonder how impartial his, or any otherpolitician with such ambitions, can be. It’s a hotly debated topic and one which comes up again and again at businessmeetings across our region. One thing is for sure, the uncertainty surrounding allthis has hindered our economic recovery and hopefully - come 23rd June - at leastthis will be resolved. Of course, 23rd June is an important date for Lincolnshire too as its the AnnualLincolnshire Show (or at least the second day of the show) so if you can make itthere, don’t forget to pay our magazine a visit as we’ll have our corporatehospitality marquee in the usual spot right next to the main ring.
