CONTENTSJULY 20141411413403:Layout 1 27/6/14 10:32 Page 1So, England are well and truly out of the World Cup –which isn’t that big a surprise for many of us, but I guesswe’d all hoped there might be a few more matches beforeour dreams were dashed!Thankfully our country’s economy is faring much betterwith the UK once again leading the way globally. Therecovery is certainly gathering steam with demand for UK-made goods giving the manufacturing sector a further boost and consumergoods, machinery and equipment all seeing marked expansions of new orders. Not surprisingly, optimism remains high and it was great to meet so many ofour readers at our corporate hospitality marquee at the Lincolnshire Show -almost all of whom seem confident about the prospects for their businesses andexpansion on the cards for a large proportion of them – quite a turnaround on afew years ago! For many though, the only thing restricting them is that ofrecruiting suitable candidates, which is becoming harder each year. Part of this is down to the new generation of staff, dubbed generation ‘Y’. Withour previous generation ‘X’ approaching their later years, this new generationmake up a whopping percentage of the available staff. On the upside, they are allinternet savvy, and should therefore be the most technologically advanced.Given their knowledge of social networking and technology this youngergeneration should be better suited to the global climate of the modern workplace. However, on the down side, this generation is said to be a lot more transient andmany seem to think they lack the work ethic of previous workforces. The other problem is that although the government has long realised theimportance of ensuring greater training for our young people they don’t seem tohave addressed this, preferring instead to concentrate on business start-upincentives and development grants.Perhaps these aspects of employment need to be fused together, but in themeantime, our region is seeing countless opportunities for funding andinvestment which we report on within this month’s issue. We also focus on thefortunes of South Yorkshire as well as what is being done to keep those elusive, skilled and talented graduates within the area so that our region continues toprosper. The answer’s certainly out there somewhere.W S FisherEditorEditorSteve Fisher (s.fisher@blmgroup.co.uk)JournalistsSteve Williams (s.williams@blmgroup.co.uk)Mike Shields (m.shields@blmgroup.co.uk)Michael Fisher (m.fisher@blmgroup.co.uk)Editorial contactnewsdesk@blmgroup.co.ukTel: (01472) 310305 Fax: (01472) 310317Sales DirectorTeri Cooper (t.cooper@blmgroup.co.uk)AdvertisingTel: (01472) 310310Kim Collins (k.collins@blmgroup.co.uk)Accounts & SubscriptionsAngela Sharman, Dawn Cook, John DownesTel: (01472) 310301 Fax: (01472) 310311Design & ProductionGary Jorgensen, Mark Casson, Rachel GreenTel: (01472) 310304 Fax: (01472) 310314(studio@blmgroup.co.uk)E-Mail:yorks-lincs@blmgroup.co.ukWebsitewww.blmforum.netAddressHaychart Ltd, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street, Grimsby, N.E. Thosebeing investigated by the taxman hasdoubled in one year. On top of this, thenumber of self-employed people investigatedhas quadrupled while annual prosecutionshave risen sevenfold in three years. The Revenue’s increased aggressivestance means more innocent businessesand individuals are likely to be investigated. What should you do if you get a call or letter from HMRC sayingthey are carrying out an investigation? The following 10 simple steps may help provide some peace ofmind:Contact your professional adviserand let them know whatcorrespondence you have received and details of the enquiry type.Do not provide the revenue with any information at this stage, youmay not need to or may provide them with more than is needed.Do not discuss your tax affairs or enquiry widely, limit discussionsto only those you have with your professional advisers.Don’t underestimate the taxman, it will surprise you howresourceful the Revenue is and what information they have or canget access to, including bank records and financial information.Limit the exposure the taxman hasto other people, an innocentquestion and equally innocent reply could give rise to difficultsituations.Don’t destroy evidenceor try to create ‘new’ evidence or re-writeevents. Destroying paperwork or computer records only increasesthe doubt of the Revenue.Be honest, misguiding or misleading the Revenue will do you nofavours and could exacerbate matters. If required to make a payment, consider the request with youradviser and then, if appropriate, make the payment according to thepayment terms, defaulting or deferring a payment could cost youmore in the long run.If the investigation reveals an offencehas occurred, put amendsto future activity and don’t reoffend. You are still at risk of futureinvestigations.Don’t brag or boastabout reaching a settlement with theRevenue, you could be at risk of another knock at the door!Take heed from the experience, and if you have in place, enjoythe value and benefit of Tax Enquiry Fee Protection insurance coverprovided by professional firm’s like accountants and tax advisers tocover their fees in advising and supporting you during an enquiry.
