< PreviousAnd finally The world of Frazer Here’s Frazer’s monthly collection of the weird and wonderful ‘news’ that came his way over the last few weeks! Since 40% of Brits have at least one tattoo, one might assume the idea of body art being inappropriate at work is long gone. Well, Frazer is here to tell you that 25% of people hiring still believe tattoos can have a negative effect on workplace productivity and morale! Delving further into the topic, new research from Savoy Stewart has revealed the professions in which people least like to see workers with tattoos, with lawyers, MPs, and medical professionals making up the top three. The firm behind the study spoke to an Environmental Psychologist and Wellbeing Consultant who noted: “The judgement of tattoos is complex, but it often comes down to pre-conceived ideas of the type of person who would have visible body art. Permanent body art is often seen as a rebellious act, even though more young individuals have them today in comparison to twenty years ago. And this creates an image of an employee more likely to take risks, less likely to conform to regulations and more likely to be self-expressive in the workplace. However, such a narrow viewpoint has started to widen.” Ok, so the working world is finally opening up to tattoos - still, Frazer thinks it may be best to avoid showing colleagues the butterfly on his lower back! Humourless An old colleague of Frazer’s shared some rather interesting information over a recent video call, about humour in the workplace. According to a new study, the average age at which people begin to laugh and smile significantly less is 23 years old, and the researchers note that it is our entry into the workforce that is to blame! Apparently, this trend can be attributed to the humourless and formal environment of many workplaces, in which we must become ‘serious’ - though Frazer’s not sure he ever got the memo. The researchers argue that humour is an under leveraged superpower in the corporate world. With laughter connected to improved resilience, resourcefulness, and creativity, as well as stress reduction, Frazer thinks we must fight for its place in the office! Liar, liar pants on fire Sometimes, when trying to earn a new role, prospective employees will stretch the truth, as we all know. However a new survey has ascertained just how far people will go to clinch a job. A staggering 39% of respondents admitted to lying on their CV at some stage in their career, with 79% of these noting that they managed to get the job! Perhaps a little lie in the application process is actually quite useful! The most common lies told revolve around skills (for instance proficiency in office software), followed by work experience, personality traits (such as organised), education, and languages. As for who is most likely to admit to lying on CVs, look no further than those seeking a job in marketing, media, or advertising. © Shutterstock/ fizkes 50 Business Link www.blmforum.net © Shutterstock/ pathdoc © Shutterstock/ FXQuadro Tattoo trouble 50.qxp_Layout 1 05/11/2020 13:42 Page 1Freephone: 0800 328 5492 Email: sales@allertonuk.com Website: www.allertonuk.com The Dependable Choice in Drainage In rural areas without a mains drainage system, and where septic tanks will no longer reach environmental standards, Allerton can provide the ideal solution.
