Heritage hotel redevelopment set to drive Huddersfield’s town centre growth

Revised plans for Huddersfield’s historic George Hotel have been approved, paving the way for its transformation into a 108-room establishment under the Radisson RED brand. The redevelopment forms part of the wider Huddersfield Blueprint regeneration programme, which aims to revitalise the town centre through culture, business, and infrastructure investment.

The updated design increases capacity from the originally planned 91 rooms to 108, following consultation with Historic England and project architects to ensure the hotel’s heritage features are preserved. The upgraded hotel will include a bar, restaurant, gym, and conference facilities, enhancing its appeal for both business and leisure travellers.

Located in St. George’s Square, the site is strategically positioned near Huddersfield Railway Station and benefits from the ongoing Transpennine Route Upgrade, which is improving regional transport links. The George Hotel project complements a series of major investments across the town, including the Light at Kingsgate, Our Cultural Heart development, and the University of Huddersfield’s National Health Innovation Campus.

The completed hotel is expected to strengthen Huddersfield’s hospitality and tourism offer, stimulate local spending, and reinforce the town’s role as a regional business and cultural hub.
