Ravensthorpe station closes for four-year rebuild under Transpennine upgrade

Ravensthorpe railway station in Dewsbury will close from 14 December until summer 2028 to allow construction of a new facility as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

The new station will be relocated around 200 metres west of its current position and will feature step-free access, lifts, and a redesigned forecourt with improved drop-off areas. A longer island platform will be built to handle extended trains and higher passenger capacity.

During the closure, replacement bus services will operate between Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury to maintain local connectivity.

The project is a key element of the TRU programme, which is modernising the rail corridor between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York. Work in Ravensthorpe includes installing a new four-track layout and constructing the Baker Viaduct to improve speed and reliability across the route. Overhead electric lines will also be fitted to support electrified services.

The redevelopment at Ravensthorpe represents a significant phase in the wider effort to increase network capacity, reduce journey times, and enhance accessibility across the North’s rail infrastructure.
