Bradford’s largest low-carbon infrastructure project is moving ahead with a £75 million investment aimed at slashing the University of Bradford’s emissions by up to 90 per cent.
The Bradford Energy Network, led by developer 1Energy with the university as anchor partner, will install one of the UK’s largest air-source heat pumps to replace the institution’s ageing gas heating system. Around half of the network’s total projected carbon savings will come from the university site alone.
Scheduled to be operational by late summer 2026, the network will also serve Bradford College, Bradford Courts and City Hall. The initiative forms part of the city’s wider strategy to decarbonise public buildings and attract green investment.
The University of Bradford, recently recognised by Times Higher Education for leadership in carbon reduction, is positioning its campus as a testing ground for large-scale clean-energy infrastructure supporting local regeneration and the region’s transition to net zero.
