Assisted living scheme moves forward after decade-long delay

A long-awaited assisted living development in Selby has secured approval, paving the way for 24 two-bedroom apartments designed for residents aged 55 and over. The scheme will be built on a former factory site close to an established care home, creating an extended cluster of age-related support services within the town.

The project replaces an earlier proposal rejected in 2015. A revised application was lodged in 2018 and held up by land ownership matters. The updated design has been adjusted to align with nearby Osborne House and forms part of a wider plan to repurpose a brownfield plot for housing with supported-living infrastructure.

Local authorities reported 16 objections from residents, with concerns centred on building scale, potential loss of outlook, the volume of development on the plot, car parking provision, and traffic pressure on surrounding roads. Selby Town Council also raised issues about density and transport impact.

The planning committee approved the scheme unanimously. For businesses in social care, construction, and local services, the decision signals new demand for age-adapted housing, auxiliary healthcare provision, and supply-chain opportunities tied to the redevelopment of the site.
