Doncaster has been awarded £20 million to accelerate regeneration across its city centre and support long-term economic development.
The funding package, confirmed on 27 November, allocates £7 million to the next phase of Doncaster Market’s redevelopment. The investment builds on recent improvements at the Wool Market and Corn Exchange and will support further expansion of the indoor and outdoor offer.
A further £5 million will be used to acquire and redevelop key city centre sites. The plan focuses on bringing disused buildings back into use to create housing, retail space, and leisure facilities that strengthen footfall on the high street.
Heritage and cultural assets will receive £3 million for shopfront renovations and the restoration or repurposing of historic buildings for community and cultural activities. Local groups will help determine specific priorities.
The remaining £5 million is earmarked for improvements to the wider city centre environment. Potential projects include new seating areas, green spaces, and public-realm upgrades, supporting activity around locations such as Gateway One, the city’s digital skills and business hub.
Minister for Devolution, Faith and Communities, Miatta Fahnbulleh, said: “It’s been wonderful to visit Doncaster to see how our new money will make a real difference to people’s lives and breathe new life into this excellent city. From funding for a bustling market that creates a community space at the heart of the city, to making sure heritage buildings are protected and restored for the benefit of local people – this funding will go to the heart of the community, where they need and want it most.”
This latest investment sits alongside £81.5 million already allocated to the wider area through the Pride in Place programme announced earlier this year.
