Recycling centre shift supports progress on major rail upgrade

A household waste and recycling centre in Dewsbury is being relocated to support the next phase of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, a multi-billion-pound rail improvement programme. Network Rail has acquired the existing Weaving Lane site to create room for engineering works on the line between Dewsbury and Ravensthorpe, including the construction of a new retaining wall and additional track space.

The relocation is funded by Network Rail and involves moving operations across the same yard. The transition is scheduled for December, when the centre will close overnight to allow equipment and containers to be transferred. It is expected to reopen the following day at the new position within the site footprint.

Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Waste, said the partnership behind the move has allowed the council to enhance local facilities. “This has been a positive collaboration between the council and the Transpennine Route Upgrade and a fantastic opportunity to deliver real improvements to recycling facilities in Kirklees.

“The new layout will provide a more accessible facility over two levels with additional parking, making it much easier and safer for the public to access the containers and dispose of their household waste.

“I’d like to thank the team behind the Transpennine Route Upgrade, and everyone involved for their cooperation.”

Access arrangements for users will remain largely unchanged, with vehicles continuing to reach the facility from Thornhill Road and Weaving Lane. The only alteration is a revised turning point at the entrance, directing traffic left instead of right.
