Sheffield launches new climate investment scheme

Sheffield has introduced a municipal investment programme that channels community and private capital into local climate initiatives. The scheme is structured as a five-year investment bond and is open to residents, community groups, and businesses, with a minimum contribution of £5.

Funds raised will be allocated to a portfolio of projects aligned with the city’s green growth and resilience plans. Early priorities include installing solar panels on public buildings and commercial sites, upgrading homes to improve energy efficiency, expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and increasing nature-based features such as green roofs and tree planting. The list of eligible projects is outlined in the city’s Green Finance Framework. The first installations are scheduled for completion by spring 2027.

Investors will receive twice-yearly interest payments and receive their capital back at the end of the term. The programme is designed to widen participation in climate action while accelerating investment in assets that lower emissions, modernise building stock, and support the city’s emerging green economy.
