Barnsley progresses plans for new town centre health and wellbeing hub

Barnsley Council is preparing to advance the next stage of its flagship health and wellbeing hub, a project positioned as a central element of the town’s regeneration plans and its push to modernise public services.

The scheme has completed its Spatial Coordination phase and will be reviewed by cabinet members as it moves into Technical Design, the stage where detailed, build-ready plans are produced. The hub will bring key health, leisure, and community functions together in a purpose-designed space at the heart of the town centre.

An NHS Community Diagnostic Centre delivered in The Glass Works formed the project’s first phase. The next phase focuses on transforming the first floor of the Alhambra Shopping Centre into a mixed-use setting for health services, wellbeing programmes, and learning opportunities, operating alongside the centre’s existing retail and leisure offer.

Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Barnsley Council is working with partners to invest in local people by driving forward Health on the High Street project for Barnsley.

“By bringing health, wellbeing, and community services right into the heart of Barnsley town centre, we’re making it easier for everyone to access the support they need, when they need it.

“This investment is about more than bricks and mortar, it’s about building a healthier, fairer, and more vibrant Barnsley for everyone. I’m proud to see us taking this next step and look forward to the positive impact it will have for our residents, their health and our local economy.”

With the hub aligned to the council’s Barnsley 2030 ambitions and Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy, the development is expected to strengthen the town centre’s role as a commercial anchor while supporting increased footfall, broader service access, and long-term economic vitality.
