A large-scale decarbonisation project has started at Sun Lane Leisure Centre as part of a plan to cut operational costs and strengthen long-term energy performance across the site.
The scheme includes rooftop air-source heat pumps, solar generation, new heat emitters, and an 8,000-litre thermal store, designed to deliver more efficient heating for the building and pool. The centre will also receive a full switch to LED lighting, a modernised building management system, and improvements to the electrical infrastructure.
Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said, “We all know that energy costs continue to rise. These works will provide a more cost and energy efficient pool. Meaning we can keep providing this important and high-quality service that I know so many of our residents use and enjoy.”
The £5 million investment is funded through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. Alliance Leisure is overseeing delivery through the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd for the council.
Most facilities will stay open during the works, with only a brief closure planned during the transition to the upgraded heating systems. Completion is scheduled for March 2026.
