College secures £1.8m to upgrade Barnsley’s HE campus

Barnsley College has received £1.8 million from the Office for Students’ Capital Fund for 2025 to 2026 to progress the second phase of redevelopment at its Church Street site, now operating as Barnsley College University Centre.

The funding will convert the remaining 2,000 square metres of the heritage building into a dedicated Higher Education facility with modern teaching rooms, study areas, collaborative spaces, and improved accessibility. The upgrade is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 additional learners each year and increase provision for adults and school leavers pursuing career-focused qualifications.

Barnsley College Principal and Chief Executive Officer David Akeroyd said: “This investment marks a significant step forward for higher education in Barnsley. It strengthens our commitment to expanding opportunities for local people to gain the skills they need for rewarding and future-focused careers.

“The redevelopment of the Church Street site is about creating a modern, inspiring environment that matches the quality and ambition of our higher education offer. This next phase will increase our capacity, widen access and support growth in priority sectors that are vital to South Yorkshire’s economy.

“We are proud to preserve and modernise this important heritage building. By choosing sustainable refurbishment, we are protecting its character while equipping it for the needs of today’s learners, employers and our community.”

The project forms part of the College’s long-term estate strategy and strengthens capacity to deliver programmes linked to regional and national skills priorities. These include clean energy within construction, engineering and manufacturing, business and financial services, digital and technology, health and social care, creative industries, and early years leadership. The expansion supports the South Yorkshire Local Skills Improvement Plan, the Mayoral Combined Authority’s economic strategy, and Skills England priorities.

The redevelopment will increase the delivery of higher technical qualifications, degree apprenticeships, and flexible learning. The College anticipates that by 2026 to 2027, most Higher Education learners will be enrolled in technical and professional programmes.

The upgrade will retain the building’s heritage features. Planned works include high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems, LED lighting with daylight sensors, smart controls, and insulation improvements intended to reduce carbon impact.
