Council pressed to advance primary school rebuild plan

Wakefield Council is considering proposals to demolish and rebuild Sharlston Community School in Sharlston Common as part of a wider national school improvement programme. The scheme outlines a full replacement of the existing buildings, upgrades to the car park, new playing fields and the addition of a multi-use games area.

The new school building would be located on part of the current playing field, prompting an objection from Sport England. Planning documents state that a replacement playing area, including a MUGA, would be constructed to the south of the site once the existing structures are removed. A large section of the northern playing field would remain in use, which meets the required size standards for sports provision.

Two residents have raised concerns about traffic and parking during construction. Other submissions indicate support for the redevelopment. Planning officers have advised councillors to approve the scheme when the planning and highways committee meets on 11 December.
