Dewsbury’s long-term regeneration has reached a key stage as the town’s Neighbourhood Board prepares to submit its 10-year plan to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). The plan outlines strategic priorities to unlock £20 million in future funding to support economic, environmental, and social improvements across the area.
Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet member for Finance and Regeneration said:
‘’This submission is a key step in developing a brighter future for Dewsbury. The partnership between Neighbourhood Board and the council is integral to ensure that not only can we deliver these ambitions but make sure that the voices of the local community are being heard within the plans throughout and that will be clear within the delivery if agreed.’’
Formed through extensive consultation with residents and local businesses, the plan aligns with the Dewsbury Blueprint and wider investment framework. It focuses on strengthening the local economy by supporting independent retailers and small enterprises while creating safer, cleaner, and more engaging public spaces.
Heritage restoration is central to the proposal, with an emphasis on bringing disused historic properties back into use and revitalising community areas. Transport and connectivity also feature prominently, targeting improved walking and cycling routes, clearer signage, and better access between the train station, market, and retail zones.
Kirklees Council will oversee the delivery and manage the funding if approved. The framework promotes local accountability, multi-agency collaboration to tackle anti-social behaviour, and initiatives that encourage civic pride and long-term community participation.
