The University of Leeds has recorded its best-ever performance in the 2026 QS Sustainability Rankings, securing 24th place globally out of 2,002 institutions and joint ninth in the UK. The university achieved an overall score of 95.8, placing it within the top two per cent worldwide.
The results highlight progress across environmental, social, and governance measures. Leeds reported strong environmental research output with a score of 98.0 and high performance in environmental education at 95.4. Operational sustainability received a score of 78.2 as the university continues to advance work through its Facilities Directorate and climate-focused teams.
The institution’s social impact score reached 98.6. Knowledge exchange activity was rated at 99.4, and results in equality, employability, and education impact were all above 96. Leeds ranked first in the UK for health and wellbeing.
Governance was another area of strength, with a score of 98.1 based on transparency, ethics, and representation.
The university’s rise reflects improved alignment between its long-term sustainability programmes and QS indicator requirements. Data quality work across academic and professional services strengthened evidence submissions.
Operational initiatives include the Leeds Living Lab, where campus-based projects test research and sustainability solutions, such as current geothermal assessments for future energy planning. Other activities span biodiversity projects, circular resource approaches, energy-efficiency work, and staff-led sustainability planning through the Blueprint programme.
