Lucchini Unipart Rail (LUR) has opened a new 102,000 sq ft bogie service facility in Warmsworth, Doncaster, marking a key step in its national growth plan. The site replaces and doubles the size of its former Hexthorpe premises, reinforcing the company’s long-term base in South Yorkshire.
The new facility forms part of a £7.5 million expansion that also includes the recent relocation of LUR’s Manchester Wheelset Repair Facility. Together, these investments strengthen the company’s dual-site strategy to boost capacity and operational efficiency across the UK.
The Doncaster operation employs 90 staff and specialises in the overhaul and refurbishment of bogies used in passenger, freight, and light rail fleets. With the additional space, the company expects to increase monthly output to around 80 bogies. Upgrades in machinery and technology are also planned to improve turnaround times and meet growing demand from the UK rail sector.
Phil Chilton, Managing Director of LUR, added: “Opening our new Doncaster facility is a significant moment for LUR and a clear reflection of our commitment to supporting our customers with greater capacity and operational excellence. We are proud to be investing in Doncaster – a city with a proud rail legacy – and it was an honour to be joined by so many of our partners and the Mayor to celebrate this milestone.”
Around 50 representatives from LUR’s customer and supplier network attended the launch event, which also marked the company’s latest investment in Doncaster’s growing reputation as a centre of rail engineering and manufacturing expertise.
