Middlehaven regeneration progresses with new development partner

Middlesbrough Council has confirmed Capital and Centric as its development partner for the long-awaited regeneration of Middlehaven, signalling a renewed attempt to revive one of the town’s most underused areas.

The agreement sets the stage for a major redevelopment programme around the Old Town Hall and the waterfront. Early plans outline the potential for up to 3,400 new homes, supported by leisure and retail spaces, to create a mixed-use district intended to attract residents, businesses and visitors.

The council has approved £3.6 million from its Towns Fund allocation to progress detailed design work for the scheme. Middlehaven has seen fragmented activity in recent years, including the Boho innovation cluster and early restoration work at the Old Town Hall. The new partnership is expected to provide a more coordinated approach after several previous proposals for the site stalled before reaching delivery.

Council leaders acknowledged the scale of the project and the need to address future funding gaps as designs advance. They also highlighted the ambition to reposition the wider town centre as a place to live and work, with Middlehaven forming a core component of that long-term vision.

The project will now move into the planning and design phase as the council and its development partner work to determine the feasibility and funding requirements for the next stages.
