Middlesbrough advances major regeneration scheme

Middlesbrough Council has approved a partnership with regeneration specialist Capital & Centric to progress a major housing and mixed-use redevelopment on long-unused land close to the town centre. The plan outlines up to 3,400 new homes, with additional leisure and retail space proposed for the area surrounding the Old Town Hall and extending towards Middlehaven Dock. The council has committed £3.6 million from the Towns Fund to advance the scheme to the stage where a construction contractor can be appointed.

Mayor Chris Cooke said the partnership represents “an enormous opportunity” for Middlesbrough. He said the proposals offer the chance to grow the town’s population, support local businesses and build confidence in an area with significant potential. During Wednesday night’s Executive meeting, Mayor Cooke said: “This is a proper, council-led project with a credible partner who has done this before. I am excited not only to see how this project develops, but to see how we can include people from Middlesbrough. It’s truly a project for the whole town.”

The site, once a historic residential district, has remained dormant for many years. It is now positioned for a long-term regeneration effort designed to increase housing supply, strengthen the town’s commercial base, and attract new investment within walking distance of Middlesbrough’s main economic centre. Capital & Centric, known for its work on challenging brownfield sites in several UK cities, will provide development expertise as the proposals move into more detailed planning.
