Mass Transit and bus franchising plans make progress in West Yorkshire

0
Plans to build tram lines in Leeds and Bradford and to integrate special bus services into the network are to be progressed.

West Yorkshire decision-makers are set to approve £40m for ongoing detailed planning and development work on Mass Transit, as well as a technical consultation on how cross-border and other special services, such as shuttle buses for sporting events and concerts, can run alongside franchised services in a single bus network.

Mass Transit and bus franchising represent two of the West Yorkshire Mayor’s biggest priorities, and will form a key part of an integrated Weaver Network connecting bus, tram and train services as well as walking and cycling routes.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said: “We are creating a transport system that works for everyone, making it easier for people across the region to access jobs, leisure and loved ones.

“The Weaver Network will deliver seamless and reliable connections – making sustainable travel the first choice in the region.

“By working together, we can build a greener, better-connected West Yorkshire that leaves no one behind.”

At a full Combined Authority meeting on 18 September, West Yorkshire council leaders will hear how the extra £40m of funding would support key works to keep the Mass Transit project on track for spades in the ground by 2028.

The work will include further technical and environmental assessments on phase one tram route options, as well as progressing the business case and preparing the plans to go before government decision-makers in the coming years. The scheme’s entry into the Government’s Major Projects Portfolio (GMPP) is also expected soon, with a key assurance review scheduled for this month.

Work is also ongoing to introduce a fully-franchised, publicly-run bus service in three phases between April 2027 and October 2028, which will apply to services running solely in West Yorkshire.

Services that are not part of the franchised network, such as those that travel between West Yorkshire and other regions, will be able to run under permits issued to bus operators via the Combined Authority. Members of the Combined Authority are expected to approve proposals to consult on the technicalities around how these permits will work.

One SC Media makes Monocle move

Digital marketing agency One SC Media has moved its headquarters into Monocle, Hull’s new hub for business and culture. Founded in 2020 by entrepreneur Subhash Chatterjee, One SC Media has grown from a kitchen-table start-up to a 40-strong team with offices in Hull, Manchester and London. The move into Monocle provides the company with a customer-facing base in the heart of Hull, complete with state-of-the-art facilities and space for expanding its team, which has already doubled in the past year. One SC Media has not only become one of Monocle’s flagship tenants but also played a central role in delivering the development’s digital and creative infrastructure. Working alongside developer Allenby Commercial, the agency has delivered IT procurement and set-up for meeting rooms and communal spaces, audio and smart technology installation throughout the building, full fit-out of Monocle’s dedicated podcast studio, a bespoke booking system for meeting rooms and the podcast studio, a new Monocle website, exterior graphics and signage for the building, and design and print of promotional flyers and menus for the building and its coffee house, Daze. Subhash – who is just 21-years-old – said: “Monocle is a stunning space and a perfect home for One SC Media as we continue to grow. It’s modern, open and right at the heart of Hull with great transport links. What makes this move particularly special is that we haven’t just moved in – we’ve helped bring the development to life. “From the graphics on the outside to the smart tech on the inside, our team has been part of making Monocle what it is today. Normally, we don’t get to see the full end result of our work, but here we’re living and working in it every day. That’s really exciting.” Subhash added: “Hull is our creative hub, and this move cements our commitment to the city. From here, we’ll continue to grow across Yorkshire and beyond, expanding our services and developing our own software products. But it’s just as important to us to create opportunities for people here in Hull. Monocle gives us the perfect base to do both.” Georgia Allenby, design and marketing director at Allenby Commercial, said: “Monocle is about creating a destination where modern businesses can thrive – not just with great facilities but with a sense of community and creativity. One SC Media embodies that spirit perfectly. “They’ve been instrumental in helping us shape Monocle, and now they are helping to define it as one of its key tenants.”

Time Out: Jordan Harrold, Director at H Harrold and Sons

0
It’s Friday, and the weekend is just around the corner. That means it is time to kick up your feet and relax with some quick fire questions. This ‘Time Out’ features Jordan Harrold, Director at H Harrold and Sons, who, if given the opportunity to travel back in time, would visit 1919, when the family business was founded. What is the first thing you do to get the weekend started? I just go home and relax on Friday nights, a nice quiet night in after a busy week – it’s quite boring really! What is your favourite hobby? I couldn’t possibly pick one! The two competing for first place would be, following Sheffield Wednesday home and away, and watching motorsport: F1 (and its feeder series F2, 3, and 4) and Indycar too. What is your favourite movie? The Dark Knight, easy – I love the whole trilogy by Christopher Nolan. If you hadn’t been successful at what you do, what would you be doing instead as a career? I would have tried to do something within football. Easier said than done! If you could have any superpower, what would it be? I think I’d choose time travelling, more on that later. What is your secret talent? I don’t really have a secret talent, but my sense of direction is unbelievable! What is your favourite music genre? I wouldn’t say I have a favourite genre necessarily, but my favourite band at the minute is the Killers, their song ‘Battle Born’ is an absolute anthem! If you could travel to any moment in time, where would you go? I’d go back to 1919, when our family business was founded. I’d love to see what the world was like back then and witness how our company was established.

New supported housing for rough sleepers takes Framework’s investment in Lincoln to £10m

New high quality accommodation in Lincoln for people with a history of rough sleeping has been opened by homelessness charity Framework. The purpose-built Sincil House on Lincoln High Street includes 15 self-contained flats for residents who will be able to access tailored and comprehensive support to help them rebuild their lives. Staff will be onsite 24/7 to provide support to vulnerable people with complex needs, helping them to regain stability, achieve independence, engage with the community and improve their quality of life. Cllr Naomi Tweddle, leader of the City of Lincoln Council, cut the ribbon at the official opening with Framework’s chief executive Andrew Redfern and deputy chief executive Claire McGonigle welcoming the new provision which takes the charity’s total investment in accommodation for homeless people in Lincoln to just under £10m. Cllr Naomi Tweddle said: “We are delighted with this latest investment in the City by Framework. The service will complement existing provision for homeless people and rough sleepers in Lincoln, to ease pressure on the system. It will provide tailored and comprehensive support to help its residents regain stability, improve their quality of life, regain independence and engage with the community.” Framework CEO Andrew Redfern said: “The development of Sincil House is the latest evidence of Framework’s long-term commitment to increase the quantity and improve the quality of accommodation for homeless people across Lincolnshire. Sincil House provides good quality, self-contained supported accommodation for homeless men and women from the Lincoln area. “This new accommodation service will be Framework’s fifth major capital investment in Lincoln. It brings Framework’s investment in the city to more than £9.6m and means that Framework can accommodate more than 100 homeless people across Lincoln at any one time. “We are most grateful to the City of Lincoln Council with whom we have worked productively for many years. This £2.65m project has been developed in partnership with the Council who helped us obtain the site and also to obtain funding from the national Single Homelessness Accommodation Programme (SHAP). “In addition to capital support this includes funding to run the service for the first two years. Framework itself contributed £950,000 to supplement the government’s £1.7m capital grant.” The Gelder Group was awarded the contract to carry out the purpose-built construction. Gelder Group CEO Steve Gelder said: “It has been a pleasure to deliver our first development for Framework, an organisation that makes a real difference to those in need of support. “The site was once home to the Golden Cross pub, a well-known spot for Lincoln City Football Club supporters, so it’s no surprise the project has attracted a great deal of local interest. This new development continues that tradition of serving the community, and we’re proud of the quality and care that has gone into bringing it to life.”

British Steel welcomes 56 new apprentices across UK sites

0

British Steel has onboarded 56 new apprentices this month, marking the first intake in three years for the UK’s only primary steelmaker.

Thirty of the apprentices have joined the company’s Scunthorpe headquarters in electrical, mechanical, and fabrication and welding roles. Fourteen others will train at British Steel’s operations in Teesside and Skinningrove, with an additional 12 Technical and Functional apprentices set to start soon.

Training at Scunthorpe is delivered through a partnership with CATCH, combining on-site instruction with sessions at CATCH’s Stallingborough facility. Apprentices in Teesside and Skinningrove will study at Middlesbrough College while gaining practical experience at the company’s northern mills.

All apprentices will work towards a National Apprenticeship qualification while receiving a competitive salary. The intake reflects British Steel’s ongoing commitment to developing skilled engineers, technical specialists, and functional experts to support its operations and future growth.

The new programme aims to strengthen talent pipelines and ensure continuity in key operational roles across British Steel’s sites.

UK economy showed no growth in July

0
The UK economy stood stagnant in July, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). GDP (gross domestic product), a key measure of economy growth, is estimated to have shown no growth for the month, following an uptick of 0.4% in June and a fall of 0.1% in May. It reflects, across key sectors, services and construction both growing in July, by 0.1% and 0.2% respectively, while production fell by 0.9%. For the three months to July, however, GDP grew by 0.2%. Ben Jones, CBI lead economist, said: “The sunshine may have lifted consumers in July, but the broader economy stayed stuck in the shade. Growth was uneven across sectors, highlighting that underlying demand remains more fragile. “Speculation about new business taxes is casting a long shadow. Amid rising cost pressures, firms are already holding back on hiring and investment and are wary of weeks more Budget uncertainty. “The government cannot tax its way to growth and continue to raid corporate coffers. With the Autumn Budget fast approaching, the Chancellor must deliver a decisive, pro-growth package by committing to serious tax reform. It’s the structure of our system – from punitive business rates to the restrictive VAT threshold and stamp duty – that holds back economic progress, not just the rates themselves.”

Fidra Energy secures funding for UK’s largest battery storage project

0

Fidra Energy has reached financial close on the Thorpe Marsh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, after securing up to £445 million in equity from EIG and the National Wealth Fund. The project will also be supported by £594 million in loan facilities from a group of international lenders, making it the largest standalone BESS financing in Europe and globally.

The 1,400 MW / 3,100 MWh facility is expected to begin construction immediately and become operational in mid-2027. It will have the capacity to supply more than 785,000 homes annually, roughly three times larger than any other BESS project currently operating or under development in the UK. Thorpe Marsh is designed to integrate renewable generation into the grid, improve flexibility, reduce energy waste, and enhance network stability.

Fidra Energy has secured long-term offtake agreements covering approximately 80% of the project’s output with EDF, Octopus Energy and Statkraft. The project also received a fifteen-year capacity market award from the UK Government, effective October 2028.

The project’s key contractors include Sungrow, providing Power Titan 2.0 batteries, H&MV Engineering, responsible for grid connections and battery system installation, and Jones Bros., Civil Engineering UK, delivering civil and drainage works.

The funding structure supports Fidra’s wider pipeline, including the 500 MW / 1,100 MWh West Burton BESS project. Combined, Thorpe Marsh and West Burton could contribute up to 11% of the additional storage capacity outlined in the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 targets.

Financial advisers on the equity raise included Santander CIB, New End, and EIG Global Energy Partners Capital Markets, with Santander CIB also advising on project debt.

Huddersfield Market regeneration plans submitted

A full planning application has been submitted to advance the regeneration of Huddersfield Market and its surrounding site, a central project in the Huddersfield Blueprint. The proposals have been shaped through public consultation and developed with Greig & Stephenson Architects.

The plans aim to modernise the historic 1887 Grade II* listed market while preserving its cast-iron frame, glass roof, and heritage character. Restoration work will return the original colour scheme of reds, pinks, and creams and address essential repairs.

The redevelopment includes a mix of fixed stalls for fresh produce, butchers, fishmongers, delis, and cheese counters. Over 70 demountable indoor stalls will allow flexible layouts for events such as food festivals and community celebrations. Hot food vendors, a bar, and seating areas are planned to increase visitor dwell time.

Accessibility improvements feature level thresholds, assisted door openers, accessible toilets, including a Changing Places facility, and expanded flat indoor areas. Externally, the Market Yard will host around 50 demountable stalls, with capacity for additional units on peak days.

The project complements the Our Cultural Heart development, with Phase 1 scheduled to open in summer 2026, and forms part of a broader strategy to increase town centre footfall and economic activity. A temporary market will be established on Brook Street between the current market and Tesco car park to maintain operations during construction.

If approved, construction is expected to start in Spring 2026.

Aptamer Group expands pathogen detection partnership with Metir

0

Aptamer Group has signed a contract with Metir to develop Optimer® binders for detectingCryptosporidium parvumin Metir’s Pathogen Detector platform. The project builds on a previous collaboration announced in June 2024 and focuses on creating high-affinity synthetic binders for integration into Metir’s real-time water monitoring device.

The system aims to provide continuous water quality testing with contamination detection within minutes, compared with traditional laboratory testing that can take several days. Aptamer’s Optimers are engineered for stability, specificity, and scalable production, with potential for multiplexed detection across environmental and healthcare monitoring applications.

The programme will progress through feasibility, isolation, and optimisation stages, with proof-of-concept results expected within three months. Completion of these milestones will advance Metir’s Pathogen Detector beyond the prototype stage, with initial trials by UK water companies anticipated upon development.

The collaboration underlines Aptamer Group’s role in supplying synthetic binders for rapid pathogen detection and supports Metir’s objective of delivering next-generation, real-time water monitoring solutions to improve public health and water safety.
