Steel firm advances major Hartlepool redevelopment

Steel Benders UK has started work on a large-scale redevelopment of the former Caparo and forge plant on Brenda Road in Hartlepool. The six-acre site, unused since 2015, is being transformed as part of a £2 million investment that will see the company move its full operation from Middlesbrough.

Planning approval has now been secured, and the first phase of work is underway. Steel Benders’ Managing Director Tania Cooper said: “With planning approval now secured, Brims Construction are on site stripping back the old plant and building the foundations for our machinery. Work began in August and we’re already seeing real progress on the new 40,000 sq ft factory. Once completed, the whole company will move to Brenda Road, making Hartlepool our new home. These are incredibly exciting times for Steel Benders UK.”

Brims Construction is leading the initial construction programme, while Steel Benders UK is supplying all steel materials for the project. The move marks the firm’s first relocation in its 23-year history and is expected to create at least 15 jobs during the opening phase.

The company will consolidate its operations from two rented sites in Middlesbrough into a purpose-built facility designed for greater capacity. The Hartlepool development will accommodate larger machinery, improved craneage, and enhanced logistics, enabling equipment that has previously remained idle due to space limits to enter production. Plans include three larger sheds, a dedicated laser facilit,y and increased building height to support higher stock volumes and more efficient workflows.

Machinery will be transferred gradually to maintain service continuity. Further refurbishment of additional sheds is planned, with rental availability targeted for 2026-2027.

Steel Benders UK has also secured support from the Tees Valley Combined Authority to assist with capital investment and job creation linked to the expansion.
