According toresearchers, the stuff that emanates from cow’s bottomsis over twenty times more powerful, as a greenhousegas, than carbon dioxide. And, to think we’re fastapproaching the Lincolnshire Show where livestock willbe in abundance. But, please don't let this stop you from visiting what is otherwise a great show.In fact if you can make it there, don’t forget to pay our magazine a visit - you'llbe in great company and of course we'll have refreshments and entertainment onthroughout the day to ensure readers get the most out of the event. You'll find usin our usual spot by the ringside, stand 13 on avenue 6, offering some greatreader giveaways and prizes. The good news is that while the boffins might still be scratching their headsover finding a solution to Daisy’s flatulence, the problem of burning fossil fuelswithout the emissions problem is currently being resolved at Drax power stationwith a multi million pound investment in bio mass and carbon capture andstorage - just two more projects that will help establish our region as a showcaseto the rest of the UK for its cutting edge solutions in the renewables sector. Ironically, I was watching a TV programme recently that explained how Britain, during the sixties, was becoming far more aware of our carbon footprint.Packaging was generally being made of more and more recycled materials, andmodern homes were being built to conserve energy. Yet here we are nearly fiftyyears on, still, highly dependent on gas and electricity from the grid to power andheat our offices and homes. It makes you wonder whether the much-vauntedEPC and BREEAM regulations are really much more than useless bits of paper. Can we honestly say we've come far in the last five decades? What are therenewables projects that will help ensure that fifty years on we aren’t stilllamenting the rising cost of utilities? If the region is benefitting from being arenewables power house where are all those opportunities for local businesses? You'll find the answers to these and much more in our Renewables Round Table, where our panel of experts discuss some of the pros and cons. It would seemthis burgeoning sector is already providing a route to profit for forward-thinkingcompanies and the message is - it’s happening right here, right now. The secondpaper on their research hasjust been published inPhysical Review Letters anddetails how specificmicrostructures can beengineered by controllingthe properties of colloids sothat they spontaneously organise themselves into clusters.Dr Buzza and Dr Horozov say that their ‘bottom up’ method could leadto faster, cheaper and more versatile methods of engineering two-dimensional structures such as microchips, which are currentlymanufactured using surface lithographical techniques – a traditional ‘topdown’ method of organising colloids which is slow and expensive.Business Link 7www.blmforum.netLATEST NEWSACCOUNTANCYHow to get yourBank Managerto say Yes in 10easy stepsChris Hubbard, Partner Streets CharteredAccountantsYou could be forgiven forthinking it is more difficult today,as opposed to four or five yearsago, to get a bank manager tosay yes to a request for a loan orother business finance. Arguably, there are some projects orventures that funders are lesslikely to fund than others, overallthe basis of getting financeapproved and your bank managerto say yes in essence still remainsthe same. If you want to improve the chance of your request for fundingbeing accepted and for your bank manager to say yes, here are afew simple steps:1. Don’t leave it until the last minute - chat to your bankmanager before you make a formal application.2. Involve your accountants at early stages in advising onplans, preparing forecasts and shaping a business plan orfunding proposal.3. Know how much you need and for what purpose and beable to demonstrate security.4. Be realistic and able to demonstrate how and over whatperiod you are going to be able to repay money.5. Don’t forget to include the true cost of borrowing inforecasts.6. Be able to provide historic accounts, current managementaccounts and forecasts, also address any skeletons in your closet.7. Be able to provide a meaningful commentary and illustrationhow funding will affect or support development of your business.8. Identify and address any risks or eventualities that may effecton your ability to repay funding – not securing increased sales, loss of a key customer or supplier or loss of a key member ofstaff.9. Don’t be too focused on one or other funding approach –you may find it better to look at a number of funding solutions orlisten to the bank as to the options available – there’s much moreto bank finance than just loans and overdrafts. 10. Be realistic about the time it may take to secure finance youneed – it invariably takes longer than you think, be able todemonstrate your commitment.Chris Hubbard is a Partner with Streets Chartered Accountants,a top 40 UK accountancy firm. I’d also like to point outa further PowerPoint problem that seems to affect a substantialnumber of presentations – slides containing too muchinformation at too small a scale. It’s remarkable how fewspeakers compile their slides without taking the audience’sperspective into consideration, ensuring the last few lines arealways obliterated for most by the heads of the front row.
